Activities
  • Develop literature review with emphasis on both emergent and independent literacy and inclusive of literacy for individuals who are deaf, blind, deaf-blind, and/or severely cognitively impaired
  • Development of Child/Youth, Service Provider and Family Literacy OPIs (Outcome and Performance Indicators) tied to existing research base
  • Dissemination of OPIs for review
  • Conduct NCDB Topical Conference on emergent literacy for children/youth who are deaf-blind
  • Dissemination of OPIs for field testing and use in planning, delivery and evaluation of technical assistance
  • Collaboration with individuals conducting research on literacy for children with complex challenges, including deaf-blindness
  • Provide technical assistance focused on improving literacy skills for children who are deaf-blind
  • Collect and analyze TA data
  • Begin work on identification of strategies/effective practices for improving achievement in math and science for children/youth who are deaf-blind
Projected Outcomes
  • Increased awareness regarding literacy for children who are deaf-blind among practitioners and families
  • Increased knowledge of effective practices for improving literacy skills of children who are deaf-blind among practitioners and families
  • Increased use of evidence-based practices to improve literacy skills for children/youth who are deaf-blind
  • Increased skills of service providers and families to improve literacy outcomes for children who are deaf-blind
