Title: Patsy Intervener Interview FEMALE NARRATOR: Can you please tell me how your intervener helped you in school? [INTERPRETER] My mom told me I had an intervener when I started school when I was 3 years old. But I don't remember her. Miss Brown started working with me when I was 5 years old. She worked with me until I graduated from Harper Heights High School. I am deaf and blind. I can't hear and I can't see. What they sign. I need an interpreter to sign to me tactilely. Miss Brown went to all of our classes with me. She would explain what the teacher was saying to the class. She would explain things to me that I did not see. Understand? I do not know what I would do if I did not have my interveners, Miss Brown, Deanna, and Charity. FEMALE NARRATOR: >> Could you please tell us how you use the intervener now that you're out of school? [INTERPRETER] My interveners help me to know what is happening. I cannot hear or see anything. I need my intervener to explain things to me. When I go out to eat, to the restaurants -- All the restaurants do not have Braille menus. I need someone to read the menus to me. Or when I go to see the doctor or a movie. I need someone to go with me to sign any time I go somewhere. I talk to my friends on Facebook and I do not need an intervener signing to me. I use technology like my computer and Braille display. FEMALE NARRATOR: So how about for shopping? How does an intervener help? [CONVERSATION BETWEEN DEAF INDIVIDUAL AND INTERPRETER] you need an intervener to go to shopping with you so they can look for things, huh, and sign to you? You can't see the colors? Oh, for the clothes and the shoes. Okay. So do you tell them what you want? What do you say? You say you want a beautiful shirt? Like pink or black or whatever? Or zebra? Okay. And then they find it? They Show you? She'll feel it and she'll see that it has hearts or flowers. I needed an intervener to work with me and the people who do not know sign. The interpreter will sign to me what they say. It's nice to have the same interveners so I know they know me and I know them.
