Discussion Board Activity - Carla's Story

As Carla’s story demonstrates, accurately reading a student's reaction to an environment can be challenging.

Can you think of a situation in which you believe a student's behavior was really intended to communicate a feeling of vulnerability (not being safe), but was misunderstood or misinterpreted to mean something else? Post a short description of the situation and your insights about what may have been occurring.

Assignment: Common Features of an Environment

Takeaway

  • The set-up of an environment plays an important role in determining the skills a student has the opportunity to practice (and therefore the skills she will learn).
  • Independence is a goal of O&M instruction, but can look different for each student depending on her needs.
